IWYS – Getting ideas off your chest

by aperioinsights on June 28, 2010

Let me start off  by saying I’m jealous of  IWYS (iwearyourshirt.com).  I wish I had thought of this idea. Not that I haven’t had good ideas of my own, but I do envy some of the stuff people like Jason and Evan come up with these days.

Everyone has ideas.  Some are great, and some really suck.  It’s easy to envy ideas that others have.

It’s also easy to tell people that their ideas are cool or “appealing”.

Many cultures make it almost impossible to react honestly to even obviously bad ideas.  The urge to be polite often overcomes our true feelings even when we are dealing with complete strangers.  Go to any networking event and people you have never met will listen to your ideas and give you feedback. Often they will try to “help” out by telling you that your idea is really fantastic.  Maybe they are hoping you’ll buy all of your idea admirers a drink but sometimes, well, you can’t take everything at face value.

It’s not that they are trying to be dishonest; it’s that we don’t always ask the right questions. It’s easy to get comments, retweets and generic feedback on new ideas and concepts. What’s harder is getting feedback that goes beyond asking others if they “like it” to begin the process of validating the market potential of an idea.   Validating market potential can mean the difference between an idea that’s “cool” and an idea that could make you the next Bill Gates or Mark Cuban (or Jason Sadler).

As you read this post, you’ve probably already thought up a least one new idea. What’s it worth? Does it have true market potential? Want to find out?

To celebrate Aperio’s day on IWYS, comment on this blog post and one lucky person (chosen at random) will win the following:

An all-expenses paid, full scale market validation study crafted just for your idea.  You bring the concept, and Aperio Insights will:

  • Craft an expertly written survey designed to validate market potential
  • Launch the survey among a national panel of U.S. consumers
  • Analyze the data and run some fancy statistics
  • Create high-level charts/graphs
  • Discuss the results with you (Skype/WebEx or you are welcome to come to Dallas)

We’ve also created a white paper called Validating Market Potential. You can find it on our site here

As I mentioned earlier, I’m a bit jealous of Jason and Evan. Not because I really want to wear your shirt but because I’ll bet that IWYS allows them to have the kind of experiences that generate LOTS of new ideas worth exploring. I’m willing to bet they have an idea or two that could use some research.

Jason and Evan – come up with an idea and we’ll run it through the Aperio Insights gauntlet to see if flies or flops.  The only catch for you guys — agree to share the results with your IWYS readers regardless of the outcome.

I really appreciate the kind words and the awesome giveaway! This is a pretty rare opportunity for a start up or new idea, I hope people take advantage and appreciate it (I know we will).

Bill Gates, Mark Cuban and me huh??

Cody Strawn June 29, 2010 at 7:14 am

Have a BUNCH of ideas I want to become reality, but I do not have the profit to do so! Hopefully I will win this contest!

Thank you guys for holding a contest!

I have an idea and would like to participate and win!

Anne Good June 29, 2010 at 7:22 am

What a great prize! I have an idea that I’ve been sitting on for 2 years now…

Paul Kortman June 29, 2010 at 7:42 am

I’m with Cody, tons of ideas, I’d love to start throwing them at a wall and see which one will stick (or at least has market viability)

Marcella Cook June 29, 2010 at 8:10 am

I have an idea that I would love to see come alive! And it would benefit others!

Garrett Kaule June 29, 2010 at 9:00 am

I have some great ideas, But I’m kind of skeptical of sharing.

Jay Koebele June 29, 2010 at 9:00 am

Have an idea that I believe has potential, especially with a tough economy. Thanks for the chance. Jay :-)

Mike June 29, 2010 at 9:01 am

We are still in the start-up phase and I’m sure we could use some help or access to a service like this. Our market is so broad it would be great to narrow it down!

MikePeritore June 29, 2010 at 9:04 am

I have a fantastic idea that could REALLY benefit from market analysis. This is definitely a dream opportunity for me!

Brock Picken June 29, 2010 at 9:05 am

I’ve got a pretty creative mind with tons of new ideas. They are all health & fitness-related ideas, as this industry is my forte.

I hope I get the chance to share many of my ideas with you!

Paul Saunders June 29, 2010 at 9:06 am

We have a unique idea that re-invent the indie music industry and with full market analysis we will be able to take it to the marketplace.

Stephen Anfield June 29, 2010 at 9:10 am

What an awesome idea! I’ll definitely have to share this with my friends! What an awesome opportunity for a budding entrepreneur!

Dulce VanDyken June 29, 2010 at 9:12 am

I have an idea and I am making it and selling it already, some stores are carrying it. Just wish I had extra money to advertise it. You can see it if you visit my website.

Andrea Hardaway June 29, 2010 at 9:13 am

Always have a bunch of ideas. Also skeptical about sharing some, but would really like feedback on others.

adventure Penguin June 29, 2010 at 9:14 am

pick me, pick me, pick me, pick me

Brandon June 29, 2010 at 9:16 am

I have a great idea that already has a small foundation – it would revolutionize the way college and professional basketball players practice. Perhaps Aperio can help us take it to the next level!

Denise Graziano June 29, 2010 at 9:19 am

What a great offer! I have an idea and my next step would be exactly this…to test its market potential so we can take another step forward. Thanks!

Karen June 29, 2010 at 9:22 am

What a great opportunity. Fingers crossed.

Michael June 29, 2010 at 9:26 am

One idea and amazing passion for our line of SpicyBeaches healthy food flavor enhanced salsas, marinades & hot sauces. All are low salt, sugar ,d oil with no additives or preservatives. Open a bottle or jar and make the foods you “should” eat foods you love to eat. Our “Floribean” cuisine, is made from fresh local produce and promotes our Gulf of Mexico Barrier Islands. We are all suffering from the threat of the BP oil spill driving away tourist. We really need your thoughts and ideas to to make our SpicyBeaches dreams continue to grow to more retail stores, markets and get out website ready for sales.
Warm salty and healthy greetings to all.
James.

Wes Wyatt June 29, 2010 at 9:46 am

This is an incredible opportunity – and if I’m fortunate enough to be chosen – I’ll have one of many ideas on deck!

Have a DYNAMITE day!

Eric Lucia June 29, 2010 at 9:47 am

I have a great idea (at least in my opinion) and a prototype.
Thank you Aperio!

Bettina Hein, Pixability June 29, 2010 at 9:49 am

We’d love to hear your insight on our idea – we help small and medium-sized businessed market themselves with video. A national panel survey would very much help our insight on our customers and help us craft our marketing message better.

NiLi June 29, 2010 at 9:57 am

Hello Aperio, Jason, and Evan!
Thank you for this opportunity. I’m opening my own business this year (I decided a week ago). I have already been told that my job’s funding will be cut in the next few months and with that my position. So, it smells and feels like time to do my own thing so I will :) . I wish everyone a great day.

Leslie June 29, 2010 at 10:09 am

Yes, I have a great business idea for small business to help them with their publicity….and I would love to share it with you. of course when I win and I have the website name bought all ready.

Liz June 29, 2010 at 10:16 am

What a cool service! I have an awesome idea and I’d like to bring it to market, but the research step is critical. Thanks for making this opportunity available!

Bari Harris June 29, 2010 at 10:18 am

What I don’t think of my husband does so we have several ideas that need to be put to the test. We joined an inventors group to help up along the way. They will advise you how do a poor man’s market research but don’t offer a free full blown one like Aperio Insights. You guys are awesome! If I win I just have to figure which idea I want researched.

Pinson Cosmetics June 29, 2010 at 10:20 am

I love your comment about being polite versus being honest. As consultants that is what we are paid for, to be problem solvers not hand holders, reinforcing the illusions.
I have two other companies Pinson Cosmetics
(anti-aging and corrective) and Pinson Bridal ( for bridal skin care/makeup/ hair) and now we have developed two new products: SeaMist Detox Bath Soak and a CD about hormone balance . Clients love them and they are selling well to known clients, but where we need help is creating Internet presence and sales with SeaMist Detox and the CD, “Sexy, Sassy, Smart for Life: Hormone Harmony” . We are listed in over twenty places for CD downloads already. But there is a big difference between being listed and gaining
I was so excited to develop fantastic products. The challenge is how to create a larger market for these two products which have proved themselves to be so remarkable to current clients. We’ve sold approx $5k/mo since launch three months ago.
I need help and would welcome input on how to be better in every way: marketing, sales both wholesale and retail, and all the Internet magic that is the modern world.
Your offer is in the Spirit of Generosity. I trust Jason Sadler’s judgment. If he thinks you are talented then I am on board. Look forward to connecting with you soon!
I look forward to winning this prize and making headway with visible results.
We have the products developed that support anti-aging ; as you know, that is only step one. Now we need to go to the larger market place with your expertise.
Many thanks in advance,
Barbara Pinson

My idea I’m trying to get goin is a organic nutritional bar called Superbar. I have ingredients I think will work. IRS a high antioxidant bar made with only superfoods.

Amy June 29, 2010 at 10:59 am

My website is under construction, and I have an idea as well. A good one, I think. But of course I think it’s a good idea, having some research to back that up would be great.
Thanks Aperio, and best of luck to everyone!
Amy

Liz June 29, 2010 at 11:11 am

I have an idea! Please enter me into the pool :)
Awesome promotion. Thank you so much.

NiLi June 29, 2010 at 11:13 am

Just wanted to add that after making my decision last week, I went ahead and got my articles of incorporation and made my company official with the state. I am not playing! No time to waste. This offer will fit in nicely with my business plan. Thanks again!

Scott Mittleman June 29, 2010 at 11:13 am

My pops and I are working on our blog that brings sports and food together. We live on opposite ends of the country but plan to travel to our favorite sporting events, sample the local food favorites and give our take on it all. Mixed in between we’ll share our sports stories and blog about the local foods we’re trying in both NY and San Fran. Who doesn’t want to follow a cool father and son team, well at least we think we’re cool!!

Mike Freestone the Good Life Granola Guy June 29, 2010 at 11:20 am

My big idea…get Good Life Granola in all 50 states within a year…it’s delicious and Jason Sadler’s favorite food….so why couldn’t we make it happen….?

Nic Ward June 29, 2010 at 11:47 am

My idea is for a mapped database of romantic locations submitted by users. My initials tests show that there is some interest and scattered competition. I even have click through data from test advertising campaigns. Those charts and graphs sound cool. Please enter me.

Carole Hayes June 29, 2010 at 11:48 am

Too many people! How am I supposed to win with so many people entering??

I want to win!

Arthur Green June 29, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I have started a couple of business’ already that have been pretty successful but I have an even better Idea than I have done so far. I would love to see what you guys would say about my revolutionary idea.

John-Paul Hayworth June 29, 2010 at 12:15 pm

What a great bonus just for following IWYS!

David Burzynski June 29, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I would like to submit the PodFlexPro as a possible winner in today’s contest.

I invented the PodFlexPro in spring of 2009. I am going through the patent process, having them manufactured in China as I type this and I am ready to launch and sell them at http://www.podflexpro.com in the next week or so. This is a one man project I did all by myself. But will they sell?

There are 100 million iPhones, iPod Touch and Android phones in circulation today. The PodFlexPro allows you to watch video and use apps HANDS FREE – at the gym, on a plane at your desk, anywhere.

I think it would be a good match of seeing how your services match up to see how a product that is tee’d up to launch will do.

David Burzynski June 29, 2010 at 12:29 pm

By the way, Jason and IWYS rule.

Jon Rodriguez June 29, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Hi Aperio, Jason and Evan,

I have two great ideas that I’m currently working with, one is more fun than business, the second is all business that sure could use some professional marketing insight. I look forward to hearing more from you guys.
